Excerpt from “The End of Liberalism” by Dan Graham, 1981-1982

“The essential truth about art of the last thirty-five years, continually erased from consciousness by the ideology of internationalist liberalism, is that fascism didn’t die with the cessation of World War II but remains the repressed collective unconscious of the present. In Nazi propaganda, new techniques of mass psychological or product representation (swastika, national flag, corporation logo) replaced traditional forms of representation. And, following the war, these techniques spread to corporate advertising. Adorno and Horkheimer were already taking note of the concurrence between Nazi propaganda and capitalist advertising in 1944: ‘The Führer['s]…voice rises from street loudspeakers to resemble the howling of sirens announcing panic – from which modern propaganda can scarcely be distinguished anyway.’”
